Recommendations and Limitations
- Read the Restrictions section for each transport company when you make a booking. They contain one or more of the following important pieces of information: Minimum and maximum acceptable parcels shipment dimensions (Maximum Height, Width or Length).
- Pricing variations - a price can depend on the number of parcels per order, the total weight, or a combination of the two. Some transport partners offer additional insurance for a small fee.
- The requirement for a departure or arrival label - Most transport companies require a label on each parcel.
- Any forbidden substances or item types. Please note that the list of items allowed to be exported/imported has changed due to Brexit.
- Items that the transport company does not recommend sending
- The allowed carry item types such as suitcases, bags and boxes
Packaging advice and Guidance
- Opt for a sturdy cardboard box big and sturdy enough to protect all your items
- Choose the most compact box that can accommodate your items: this way to keep the cost down and also limit the amount of empty space
- Make sure to remove all previous labels.
- Pack items individually to reduce the breakage
- Use internal packagings like bubble wrap or packing peanuts
- Once packed, seal the box with plenty of parcel tape, do not forget to reinforce the corners.
- Place the label on the box in a visible area
- Fill in the packing list and customs declaration if you are sending parcels to or from the UK
- Take a photo of the parcel for your records in case you need to contact the courier later
- Make sure you have a clear list of the items inside each parcel, you might need this for Customs Declaration or insurance
How to measure a Parcel?
- Parcel measurements (dimensions and weight) are important to avoid additional charges or cancellations as some carriers have strict rules and limitations on what they can carry.
- Use a ruler and note down the three important measurements: Length, Width and Height of each parcel you need to send.
- If you don't have a ruler, use a sheet of paper (which measures 21cm x 30cm)
- If you don't have a suitable scale for parcels, use your personal bathroom scale while holding the parcel and subtract your body weight.
- The units of measure are Centimetres (cm) and Kilograms (Kg)
- Weigh and measure your parcel only after it's fully packaged and sealed with tape
- If in doubt... Be generous! It's better to estimate more than less.
What you need to know about Brexit?
- All parcels to and from the UK need to have a Customs Declaration
- The Customs Authorities can confiscate parcels without a Customs Declaration.
- For Gifts with a declared value below £39, for goods sent to the UK, and 45€, for parcels sent to Europe, are exempt from Import VAT and Customs Duty (* please see the specific list of products for each country)
- Even if your parcels do not qualify for Import VAT and Customs Duty, you should expect to be asked to pay Customs Fees for the import-export duty clearance
- Make sure you have a clear list of the items inside each parcel. You will need this Packing List for Customs Declaration procedures.
